CAPPED OR UNCAPPED? Get the Right Data Package for you.

Article by · April 3, 2018 ·

If you’re one of those people who answer the question, “How does the internet work?”, with “It’s Science”, then you should give this article a read. Knowing how data and internet work together is the first step to understanding which data package would best suit your needs. As an end user, you do have power in deciding what works for you. Choosing capped or uncapped data packages should align with how often you use the internet. The number of people dependent on the internet service is also a significant factor to consider.

What is Internet Data?
Any device that connects to the internet makes use of data. The data that connects your phone to the internet will connect your laptop and PC as well. We all know that fibre is the fastest and offers the best connection, but it has quite a substantial data consumption. So generally speaking uncapped fibre lines are the first choice as you never run out of data and experience an excellent internet service.

What is Capped Data?
Services do vary between internet service providers, but in general, capped data is faster than uncapped. There is no throttling on a capped package. It is also more expensive than uncapped as you pay more per GB. There is a finite limit to the data that you can use. Once you run out of data, dependant on your package, you will have to pay additional charges.

Capped is not a good option if you will be engaging in any heavy downloading. A gamer won’t find a capped data package sufficient. Streaming series from a site like Netflix will probably exhaust your data limit quite quickly.  It would suit a family household where the internet provides for tech-savvy kids who require internet services but where the parents don’t use the internet all that much.

What is Uncapped Data?

Sonic Telecoms capped uncapped dataThe uncapped data will provide you with unlimited access to the internet for a fixed period. You pay a fixed fee, and you do not have to worry about additional charges to your account. Generally, on uncapped packages, you will experience throttling. Sonic Telecoms does not throttle users on uncapped packages.

We are the exception, not the rule when it comes to uncapped data. Businesses providing the uncapped package still have to pay for the data you are using.  Some Internet Service Providers (ISPs) will, therefore, slow down the data rate during high usage periods by throttling you. Throttling will decrease the overall speed of the line. For businesses, an uncapped line may end up being more cost-effective in the long run as opposed to capped data. Sonic Telecoms stands out amongst its competitors as it offers you speed as well as unlimited access. “Uncapped, Unshaped”, is our motto.
